Microsoft and Asus unveil Xbox handhelds with full-screen gaming mode
Includes access to Steam, Game Pass, Battle.net and more game libraries
DUBAI: Microsoft has partnered with ASUS to launch two powerful handheld gaming PCs – the ROG Ally and ROG Ally X – aimed at delivering a seamless, console-style experience through Windows 11.
Unveiled during the Xbox Games Showcase, these portable machines are designed to offer access to the Xbox ecosystem alongside support for Steam, EA Play, Ubisoft Connect and Battle.net.
ASUS hardware upgrades
The standard white ROG Ally comes equipped with a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz display and AMD Ryzen Z1 APU, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB SSD. The more advanced ROG Ally X, finished in black, features the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip, 24GB RAM, and 1TB storage – ideal for gamers seeking higher performance at 900p to 1080p resolutions. ASUS has maintained the ergonomic console-like design, offering familiar controls and grip.
Windows 11 full-screen mode
Microsoft is rolling out a new full-screen Xbox experience tailored for handhelds, booting directly into a simplified UI instead of the standard Windows desktop. This version disables taskbars and wallpapers, freeing up around 2GB of memory and improving responsiveness and battery life.
Users can still toggle back to the Windows interface when needed, giving them flexibility.
Game Bar enhancements
The upgraded Game Bar lets players quickly adjust Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and audio settings without leaving their game. A new task switcher helps users bounce between titles and apps efficiently. Microsoft is also integrating a unified game library across Xbox, Steam, and other storefronts to streamline discovery and access.
AMD Ryzen Efficiency
Both devices are powered by AMD’s latest Ryzen Z1 series processors, optimised for handheld performance and energy efficiency. Initial benchmarks show the full-screen Xbox mode uses two-thirds less idle power than the standard Windows interface, helping extend battery life – a major concern in portable PCs.
What’s next for Xbox gaming?
While pricing and global availability are expected later this year, Microsoft confirmed the new full-screen Xbox experience will expand to additional Windows handhelds in 2026.
With support for Xbox Cloud Gaming, Remote Play, and major game libraries, the ROG Ally range signals a new phase for cross-platform gaming.
